Located within the serene Damajirao Baug in Patan, the Shree Chhatrapateswar Mahadev Temple stands as a magnificent 250+ year-old testament to history, faith, and architectural brilliance. Originally constructed in 1773 AD (Samvat 1829) by the Gaekwad government at a cost of approximately Rs 25,000, this structure was initially built as a Samadhi (memorial shrine) or ‘Chhatri’ in honor of Maharaja Damajirao Gaekwad II, one of the influential early rulers of the Baroda State. Over the centuries, this royal memorial evolved into a sacred place of worship dedicated to Lord Shiva, earning the name “Chhatrapateswar” due to its unique umbrella-like dome.

The temple’s architecture is truly one-of-a-kind, featuring a construction that sits 20 feet below ground level. The sanctum is supported by 36 sturdy pillars that hold up a grand dome, showcasing the exceptional engineering of the Gaekwad era. Inside, the temple houses a sacred Shivling alongside a serene marble statue as well as Photo of Damajirao II. It is also one of the rare shrines where the entire Shiva family is worshipped together, making it a significant site for devotees, especially during the holy month of Shravan.

Beyond its religious importance, the temple is a treasure trove for art lovers. The interior ceilings are adorned with beautiful, though faded, paintings depicting timeless scenes from the Ramayana and the Dashavatara. The intricate stone carvings and the enduring strength of the 250+ year-old structure continue to fascinate tourists and historians alike. Managed to this day by the administration in Vadodara, the Chhatrapateswar Mahadev Temple remains a vital link to Gujarat’s royal past and a beacon of spiritual peace in Patan.
