Traffic Islands of Baroda

Vadodara city is full of traffic islands installed with a lot of sculptures. Most of these were made by the local artists and sponsored by the industries of Baroda.

Vad Circle

Vad Circle is situated on the road connecting Nizampura to Channi. The prominent sculpture at this location, crafted by local artist Nagji Patel, was commissioned by IPCL. Made from sandstone, the sculpture was initially installed in 1991 on the road to the MSU Pavilion and Nizampura. It was later relocated to its current position in Vad Circle in 2015.

Genda Circle

Located on the road leading to Vadodara Central, Genda Circle features a striking sculpture of a rhino created by Narottamdas Kavaiya, also known as Narottam Luhar. Commissioned by Indubhai Patel, the founder of SIECL (Sayaji Iron & Engineering Company Ltd) in the 1970s, the rhino is constructed from iron scraps sourced from the SIECL plant. Weighing nearly 3 tonnes, the rhino symbolizes brutal force, aggressiveness, and strength. The circle is popularly known as Genda Circle, as “Genda” is the Gujarati word for rhino.

Abacus Circle

Previously known as Akshar Chowk Circle, Abacus Circle is located on the road from Mujmahuda to Padra Road. This sculpture, resembling an ancient arithmetic calculator, was initially installed at this site but was removed in 2014 without explanation. It was reinstalled near Sama Crossroads in 2017. Like the sculptures in Vad Circle, this piece was also created by Nagji Patel and commissioned by Transpek Silox Company. The name “Abacus Circle” reflects the sculpture’s resemblance to an abacus.
