Located on Rang Mahal Road, the Shani Temple in the Wadi area is one of the many ancient temples in the city. This temple is approximately 260 years old and features an idol of Lord Shani artistically carved from a single black stone. Notably, it is said to be the only idol of Lord Shani in Gujarat where he is depicted riding a buffalo. According to the family that performs the deity’s worship, this temple was established by the ancestors of the current priest, the Dave family. Presently, Ayurvedacharya Maharaj Jayashankarbhai Dave and his sons serve and perform the worship and rituals of Shani Maharaj. Jayashankarbhai, who is 85+ years old, has dedicated his life to the service of the deity since he was eight years old.

The Unique Idol and Spiritual Significance

The Shani Temple in the Wadi area is renowned for its unique representation of Lord Shani. The deity’s idol is carved from a single block of black stone and is distinct for depicting Shani Dev riding a buffalo—a feature reportedly unmatched in Gujarat. The idol holds his father, Suryanarayan, in his hands. Suryanarayan symbolizes truth in the Kali Yuga, akin to the way the rising sun dispels darkness. By witnessing Shani Dev holding Suryanarayan, devotees are believed to have their faults and sorrows alleviated, as the divine presence is said to clear away their troubles.

It is a common belief among devotees that Shani Dev resides in this temple, providing a spiritual refuge for the past 260 years. The temple symbolizes hope for devotees, offering them relief from their adversities and leading them to a path of peace and prosperity.
