Nestled near the Khanderao Market, the Shri Sayaji Vihar Club stands as a proud testament to the architectural and cultural vision of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Originally established as the Officers’ Club for sports activities, this historic building embodies the grandeur and elegance of its time.
The Building
The design of the Shri Sayaji Vihar Club aligns with the architectural style prevalent during its construction, featuring a distinctive color scheme of brick red and ivory. The building is primarily rectangular with a symmetrical layout along its longer axis and includes a prominent tower-like element at one corner. Entered through a front porch on its smaller side, the double-storeyed structure showcases a blend of austerity and ornate detailing.
The most striking aspect of the building is its facade, visible from the main road and entrance. Here, Gothic architectural influences are evident, with arcaded verandas on both floors displaying pointed arches and trefoil window-like elements. The facade is further adorned with perforated parapets, small lantern-like cupolas, and finials, adding to its architectural charm.
Despite its historical significance, the Shri Sayaji Vihar Club has faced challenges over the years. The building, though not in poor condition, has been repainted in unconventional shades of red and brown, detracting from its original aesthetic appeal. Once a premier venue for sports activities in the heart of the city, the club has seen a decline in its facilities. Most sports amenities, except for badminton, have been closed or sold off. The tennis courts, which once served as a popular retreat, have been replaced with a party plot, marking a significant transformation from their original purpose.
