Located near Genda Circle, the Model Farm was an important initiative launched by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Established in 1892, this farm was dedicated to advancing agricultural education and training farmers. It played a pivotal role in experimenting with and producing high-quality seeds.
Founding of Agricultural Institute
In 1936, the Sheth Dosabhai Maganlal Agricultural Institute was founded in Baroda, thanks to a generous donation of Rs 50,000 from Sheth Dosabhai Maganlal and Shrimati Jashumati Sheth. This institution was designed to provide specialized training and advanced education in agriculture, reflecting the growing importance of agricultural science.
Transition to Gujarat Agricultural University
Initially, the Model Farm was connected with agricultural classes at the college, which were eventually relocated to the farm itself. This led to the establishment of the Agricultural Diploma School. In 1972, with the founding of the Gujarat Agricultural University, the Model Farm became a substation of the Anand campus, further strengthening its role in agricultural education.
Gir Cattle Dairy
The farm also housed a Gir cattle dairy, which provided pure milk and butter to the royal family, European residents, and the cantonment. Despite its initial success, the dairy eventually faced commercial challenges and was closed.
Use for Prisoners and Juvenile Correction
In addition to its agricultural functions, the Model Farm was used to teach farming skills to prisoners from the Central Jail. It also served as a juvenile correction center, aimed at equipping prisoners with skills to help them earn a livelihood upon their release.
