Lad Wada

Vadodara-Baroda By 1 Comment

Located near Gendi Gate, Lad Wada originally known as Lad Bibi no Wado, is steeped in history and cultural significance. This area is named after Lad Bibi, a prominent figure of the past who played a notable role in the region.

Historical Background

Lad Bibi was the wife of Nawab Pathan of Patan. After parting ways with her husband, she settled in this area and became a well-respected and influential figure. Lad Bibi was known for her strong connections with the rulers of Baroda and her considerable wealth and influence. Sureshwar Desai, who contributed to establishing Gaekwadi rule in Baroda, was responsible for handling her financial matters.

During the Mughal era in Baroda, Sher Khan Babi, an officer of the Mughal Suba from Ahmedabad, was in command. He resided in Bhadra near Pani Gate, reflecting the region’s complex political landscape at the time.

Despite popular belief, the area was not actually inhabited by the Lad community, as some sources might suggest. Instead, Lad Wada’s name and its historical connections are tied to the influential Lad Bibi and her interactions with the region’s rulers.
