Kotys Studio

Vadodara-Baroda By No Comments

Hidden behind a tall tree, this beautiful building was once the Kotys Family Studio. Hailing from Mysore, the Kotys were photographers for Baroda’s royal Gaekwad family.

Continuing with the trend of that time, this building also displays exposed brickwork. But what makes it different from the other buildings is the use of sandstone and the little domes on its top. It is adorned with graceful cusped arches and lotus motifs carved in sandstone. The building also bears the “Baroda State’s Coat of Arms” emblem above its entrance. Below this emblem one can see ‘Kotys Photographer & Travel Service’ with the address of building stated as ‘The Royal House, Palace Road, Baroda’!

As time passed and newer technologies emerged, the Studio gradually faded into obscurity. Today, it serves as an office for a travel agency, yet it still holds a collection of old images depicting the Maharaja, Maharani, and the Baroda State.
