Jubilee Baug is a historic garden nestled in the heart of the city, offering a serene escape from the surrounding urban bustle. Its towering trees and lush greenery provide a welcome respite for locals who come here for morning walks or to enjoy the environment.

Buddha Statue Inspiration

A standout feature of Jubilee Baug is its stunning Buddha statue. This statue was inspired by the Big Buddha in Kamakura, Japan, which Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III admired during his visit to Japan in 1910. Moved by the grandeur of the Big Buddha, the Maharaja decided to create a similar monument in Jubilee Baug.

The statue was crafted through the combined efforts of Osao Watanabe and Sessei Okazaki. While Sessei was responsible for casting the shape, Osao designed it. The statue was transported from Japan and unveiled on December 31, 1912 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III as a gift to the city on the 25th anniversary of his reign. This monument has become a significant landmark within the garden, enhancing its historical value.

On the day of inauguration, Maharaja Sayajirao said about Lord Buddha:

His doctrines have been consolation life and death to untold millions, softening wild and savage races, by tender words of loving kindness raising the despairing to higher things and sharing the blessedness of the noble Aryan Middle Path

Garden Features

In addition to the Buddha statue, Jubilee Baug features a beautiful wooden pavilion and a variety of flowering plants. The garden’s entrance gate, inspired by the Sanchi Stupa, is intricately designed and adds to the garden’s cultural and historical allure.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Jubilee Baug plays a vital role in the city’s ecosystem. It provides a recreational space and contributes to improved air quality, acting as the “lungs” of the city amidst the concrete surroundings.
