Located near Khanderao Market, the Govindrao Madhyavarti School was established by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890 in honor of Maharaja Govindrao Gaekwad. Originally, the school also served as a music college, known as ‘Gayan Shala,’ for a period. The original building was replaced by a new structure in 1937, also commissioned by Sayajirao III.

Architectural Features

The Govindrao Madyavarti School is unique for being the only building dedicated to Maharaja Govindrao. The three-story building boasts a grand facade with tall Islamic arches, giving it a regal appearance. Its design includes exposed brickwork complemented by contrasting Songadh sandstone, similar to the Maharani Chimnabai Stree Udyogalaya. The school is well-planned with ample ventilation and natural light, creating a pleasant learning environment. At the back, there’s a large open area used as a playground, and the terrace features a stage that was once used for flag-hoisting ceremonies.

The building also served as an office for one of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s departments until recently. After the department moved, the building was restored and returned to its original use as a school, preserving its connection to Maharaja Govindrao as intended.
