It is often astounding to see how a single individual can profoundly impact the lives of thousands in a short span. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III was one such visionary who transformed Baroda, placing the city prominently on the national map.
In 1938, to mark the 60th year of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III‘s rule, the citizens of Baroda organized a grand celebration to honor their beloved king. A special committee was formed to oversee the substantial funds raised for the occasion. The funds were so extensive that even after the lavish celebrations, a staggering Rs. 1 crore remained.
Determined to utilize this surplus wisely, the committee decided to establish a vocational training institute aimed at assisting the less fortunate residents of the city. The goal was to provide practical training to those who had been deprived of educational opportunities due to financial constraints. This initiative was further bolstered when the committee received an additional donation of Rs. 1 crore from Yuvraj Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad, the heir apparent.
The institute, named the Diamond Jubilee Institute, was established with a vision to create a comprehensive educational complex. The campus was designed to include various departments such as electroplating, woodworking, printing, sewing, textiles, and carpentry. For years, these departments offered high-quality training, equipping students with skills to become self-reliant and secure their livelihoods.
Regrettably, over the years, the institute’s prominence has waned, and the complex now suffers from neglect due to disuse. Despite its decline, the Diamond Jubilee Institute remains a testament to Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III’s enduring legacy and his commitment to the betterment of his people.
