Vadodara, a city rich in history, proudly showcases its heritage through the Gaekwad-era police posts that continue to stand as symbols of its past. Originally, the city had only four police stations and fourteen posts, but these historic posts remain cherished landmarks.
Here’s a look at some of Vadodara’s notable police chowki:
Pratapganj Chowki: Situated near Kalaghoda, this small structure mirrors the design of the Bhesana Police Chowki.
Babajibura Chowki: Located close to Sursagar Lake, this chowki is named after Shri Babaji Apaji Fanse, the Dewan of the Baroda State.
Patthargate Chowki: Located near Deepak Open Air Theatre, this is one of the oldest chowkis in the area.
Market Chowki: Adjacent to Khanderao Market, its wooden architecture remains intact, offering a glimpse into its historical past.
Bhesaniya Chowki: Situated at the northern end of Pologround, this white-colored structure is named after the original name of Pologround, Bheasana or Bhesaniya Talav.
Ganjkhana Chowki: Located outside Pani Gate on the way to Ajwa, this small yet significant chowki dates back to the Gaekwad era.
Laheripura Chowki: Positioned next to Lehripura Gate, it reflects the area’s historical essence.
Jamnabai Chowki: Once known as Jamnabai hospital, it was later converted into a police chowki. Despite its dilapidated state, it boasts amazing carvings and architecture.
Champaner Chowki: Near Champaner Gate, this chowki has been rebuilt with bricks, losing some of its old charm.
Rokdanath Chowki: Located near Navabajar, this chowki too has been rebuilt with bricks, losing some of its old charm.
Fatehpura Chowki: Positioned outside Champaner Gate on the way to the airport, this chowki is a historical gem from the Gaekwad period.
Shiyapura Chowki: Next to Raopura Tower, this chowki features beautiful wooden architecture but is in poor condition.
Bahucharaji Chowki: Near Nagarwada Char Rasta, this chowki resembles the small building style of Rokadnath and Champaner Police Chowkis.
Raopura Chowki: Established in 1916, this two-story building celebrated its centenary in 2016. Once housing officers, it now serves administrative needs while maintaining its cool, historical charm.
These posts, some over a century old, continue to serve the city. It is crucial for the Corporation to consider renovating and preserving these structures to ensure Vadodara’s historical essence endures for future generations.
